An important project for ASEAN integration is the drawing up of a plan to improve ASEAN's internal and external connectivity. To give publicity to this effort, ASEAN FMs agreed to meet in Thailand, cross over to Laos and travel by road for our retreat in Danang along the east-west economic corridor (EWEC).
This afternoon, we flew from Bangkok in a Thai Air Force Hercules C130 kindly provided by Thai FM Kasit to Savannakhet in Laos on the Laotian-Thai border. We then drove to the new bridge across the Mekong opened three years ago, went over to the Thai side, took many pictures, crossed back, visited the Savan-Vegas casino hotel before being hosted to an elegant dinner on the bank of the Mekong by Laotian DPM/FM Thongloun. One has to be careful crossing the Mekong because it is right-hand drive on the Thai side and left-hand drive on the Indo-Chinese side.
Early tomorrow morning, we will board a coach and trundle across to Quang Tri province in Vietnam where Vietnamese DPM/FM Khiem will welcome us and host us to lunch in Hue. After lunch, it will be an easy ride to Danang on the South China Sea coast.
