My wife and I were pleasantly surprised to receive a last minute invitation to attend Zoukout by Lincoln Cheng, owner and founder of Zouk. We accepted, curious to know what all the excitement was about. Just the night before, some young friends told me they were attending.
It turned out to be much more enjoyable than we expected. The weather was perfect with a gentle breeze blowing in from the sea. When we arrived at Siloso Beach at 10.30pm, the crowd was streaming in but not yet the surge which started after 11pm. I can't say I understood the music, but it had a strong beat and rhythm. From Rasa Sentosa to Wave House, there were four stages. The mood was very good. Those who came, Singaporeans and foreigners, young and not-so-young, had a wonderful time, dancing to the music or moving with the rhythm, or just watching people walk by. Lincoln invited me to watch the crowd from the two big stages, which was fun. A group of CNA ladies asked me what I was doing there. Taken aback, I replied: same reason as you are here. After the fireworks and laser show ended at about 1.30am, we took our leave. Party goers were still streming in. The top DJ, Van Buren, was only coming on at 5am! My wife and I adjourned to Havelock Rd for bak kut teh with Henri and Kai Ling before going home to sleep.
It is quite remarkable how Zouk has become an international brand name, and Zoukout a major world music festival. It is even more remarkable that we are able to keep Zoukout largely drug-free. Next year will be the 10th anniversary of Zoukout which Lincoln promised would be celebrated in a special way.
George Yeo
Thank you Mr. and Mrs. Yeo for coming to ZoukOut 2009 to grace our event. It made the event that much more meaningful and the effort we all put in that much more worth it. Hope to see you at Zouk or at ZoukOut 2010.
