Nvidia, the company that manufactures PC's graphic cards has come up with a 3D application that converts all computer games to 3D. The user has to wear the red/green spectacles and using a normal PC and a normal monitor, the image becomes 3D. I tried it and it is amazing!
The next innovation will be converting all your movies to 3D. Imagine watching the famous Star Wars' trench run in eye popping three dimension! Imagine John Woo's bullets firing in your face! And that good looking vampire swooping down to bite your neck in New Moon...the school girls will go into heavenly ecstasy! Isn't that awesome!
Observe the movie trend too. Every mega blockbuster now is 3D-enabled. Expect that to trend down to TV shows and computer games. It will be the usual technology first adoptor's chasm- there will be a few buyers and after a few years, everyone has it.
I tested the 3-D demo kit by Nvidia using a PC running on the lowest 3D specifications - normal LCD monitor, Nvidia graphics card GT8800 and a normal non-3D game "Quantum of Solace 007". It worked! The images jumped up and my Walter PPK pistol seemed suspended in mid air right in front of me. How does it work? The simple answer is that computer games graphics is layered and all they need is to make use of the layered graphical data and convert it to 3D images. It is presently not possible to convert non-3D movies on the fly but with powerful computing capability following Moore's Law (or even exceeding it), anything is possible.
I will pick 3D as the next new thing in entertainment in 2010.
