1 I began my official visit to Russia with a pilgrimage to Sergiev Posad, the most important monastery of the Russian Orthodox Church. It was a cold beautiful sunny day. The arrival was stunning as blue and golden onion cupolas emerged on the horizon. The ground was all white with a few snow flakes dancing in the air.
2 This is the town of St Sergey whose relics are venerated by a long line of devotees. I was allowed to cut queue to see his incorrupt mortal remains. He is one of Russia's most important saints. It was he who blessed Prince Dmitry before his historic battle against the Golden Horde in 1380 on the filed of Kulikovo. This marked the rise of Muscovy.
3 Accompanied by Bishop Sergii from Vladivostok who is now based in Singapore, we were shown beautiful icons and holy relics. The architecture is impressive dominated by a five-tier belfry. Over the centuries, different czars added to the splendour of the complex.
4 At the end of my tour, we were hosted to tea by the Rector of the Seminary and Academy, an archbishop. I was very touched by the warmth of the welcome extended to the Singapore delegation.
